Union City swept Lake County 3-0 to open its 2023 volleyball season Monday night.
The Lady Tornadoes won 25-9, 25-13, and 25-11 in the varsity match after the jayvee squad triumphed 25-9 and 25-12.
Madie Theobald had nine service aces and was credited with 16 assists to pace UC in the nightcap, while Addison Carr had 23 assists and three aces. Debrionna Jones had five kills, and Gracelyn Sims was good for four winners.
In the jayvee competition, Rylee Stone finished with nine aces, and Cricket Washburn delivered seven for the winners.
Union City will play at Henry County today.

Tornadoes compete in Jackson’s FCA tourney
Teams from all over West Tennessee competed in the annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes event at Jackson Country Club in an 18-hole tournament.
The UC girls placed seventh out of 11 teams, while the Tornado boys were eighth, with 16 schools represented.
The Lady Twisters collectively shot 205 to trail tournament winner South Gibson County (171). Mimi Jenkins carded a 90, while Adaline Rice finished with a 115.
Tori Robinson of Trinity Christian Academy was the medalist on the girls’ side with a 76.
In the boys’ competition, Union City shot 367 as a team. USJ claimed honors with a 303.
Reese Paschall and Copeland Chism each came in with an 88 for the Purple and Gold. Brody Riley finished with a 92, and Gavin McGuire shot 99.
Christian Pardue of MHEA carded a 70 to claim medalist honors.
UC will be back in action today at Wynridge Greens in Troy vs. Obion County Central.
