MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team wrapped up its nonconference schedule with a 4-0 setback to the No. 14 Memphis Tigers this evening.
In the 12th all-time meeting between the two schools, the Tigers (7-1) scored in the sixth minute and wouldn’t relinquish the lead for the remainder of the match.
Sophomore Poppy Bastock trapped seven shots in goal while Andrea Wie would snare one save in her 23 minutes between the posts for the Skyhawks (3-5-1). Caroline Moore paced UT Martin offensively as nationally ranked Memphis held its third consecutive opponent scoreless.
The Skyhawks unveiled a starting lineup which included four freshmen (Jordan Bailey, Joelle Stinson, Gwen Walters, Peyton Cook) as six additional collegiate rookies also saw significant playing time tonight. Graduate Catey Hunt logged the full 90 minutes on the pitch to lead all UT Martin players in that category.
“The overall effort and work rate were exceptional tonight,” said Skyhawk head coach Mike Varga. “Memphis is as good of a team as you can play. They’re a Final Four caliber team and it was a good experience for us to play against that quality tonight. Now we will put in a couple good days of training and get ready for the conference season to begin.”
UT Martin will conclude a season-long five-game road stretch when it visits Morehead State for the Ohio Valley Conference opener on Thursday, Sept. 21. The match will be broadcasted live on ESPN+ as first touch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST.
