There were multiple reasons for Union City to celebrate after the District 14A golf tournament on Monday.

The Lady Tornadoes claimed their second team championship in as many years, led by tourney runner-up Mimi Jenkins, who birdied the third hole of a playoff to earn that second-place finish.

And freshman Gavin McGuire recorded a hole-in-one for the UC boys, acing the 16th hole to help his team to a third-place showing.

McGuire’s six-iron shot traveled 162 yards and found the bottom of the cup on the second bounce.

With their respective finishes, both Purple and Gold squads qualified for Wednesday’s Region 7 Tournament, to be played at the Tennessee River Golf Club in Decaturville.

Jenkins shot 38-43 (81) on the Persimmon Hills course in Sharon Monday to top Union City’s 168 team total. The Twisters were 13 strokes better than runner-up McKenzie.

Addy Rice came in with an 87 (44-43) to place fourth individually for the Lady Tornadoes.

Freshman Allie Vincent finished with a 133.

South Fulton’s Maddie Gray was the tournament champion with a 75.

The UC boys – led by Reese Paschall’s 85 (43-42) – shot 361 as a team to trail first-place Westview and runner-up McKenzie.

Brody Riley (44-45) came in with an 88, McGuire (49-42) registered a 91, and Copeland Chism shot 97 (57-40) for the Twisters.

Wednesday’s 18-hole regional event will determine state qualifiers, with that tournament to be held at the Sevierville Golf Club in mid-October.
