
CARROLLTON, Ga. – For the second straight year, the Union University men’s golf team captured the Matt Dyas Invitational championship. The 3-round event was hosted by the University of West Georgia and was played at the Oak Mountain Golf Club. It featured nine teams with 50 golfers.
In addition to the team win, Union freshman Trace Robinson won his first collegiate tournament with medalist honors this week in Georgia. Robinson shot a 3-round total of 218, 2-over par (74, 67, 77). He shot a tournament-best round of 67 in the second round Monday afternoon. Robinson held off runner-up Preston Giroir with a 219.
In the three events so far this season, Union has two wins and a third-place finish. Union also has two medalist winners with Robinson adding to Gray Campbell’s medalist win to open the season at Montevallo.
Union was the only team to be able to figure out the tough course in the two rounds on Monday. Union led by as many as 22 strokes on Monday and held a 16-shot lead going into Tuesday’s final round. Union joined the field finding difficulties in the final round but was able to hold on for a 2-stroke team victory. Union shot a 297 (+9) in the first round, followed by a tournament-best 285 (-3) in the second round and a 309 (+21) in the third round.
Union (+27) was first, Delta State (+29) second, Mississippi College (+32) third, and West Georgia (+34) fourth. Loyola-New Orleans finished fifth, MUW sixth, Georgia Military seventh, Christian Brothers eighth, and Spring Hill ninth.
Joining Robinson in the top 10 for Union was junior Gray Campbell in eighth place with a +6 222, shooting his best round and a team-best final round of 72 in the final round helping Union hold on for the victory. Daniel Maybee finished T18 with a +12 228 (73, 76, 79), JJ Zimmer 20th with a +13 229 (75, 71, 83), and Timothy Pinkston T31 with a +17 233 (80, 72, 81). Jack-Henry Wise played as an individual for Union and finished T21 with a +14 230 (77. 77. 76).
Up next for Union will be the Citrus Intercollegiate in Orlando, Florida, October 30-31. It will be their last event of the fall season.
