UT Martin Track Opens 2024 With Strong Showing At Commodore Challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- In the first event of the new year, the University of Tennessee at Martin track and field teams set two new school records along with several personal records at the Commodore Challenge. UT Martin went up against some of the top programs in the country, including Indiana, Illinois, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

 

Meet Highlights

–        The junior Samir Smith snapped a school record in the 300 meter with a 35.86 on the first day of competition. The record breaking time landed Smith in 15th place.

–        Sanaa Smith impressed in the Music City with a school record 43.67 in the 300 meter to join Samir Smith as the two newest Skyhawks to etch their names into the record book.

–        The Festus, Mo. native Rita Eimer finished in the top-20 in the one mile notching a PR of 5:14.48 (17th).

–        Maggie Roy finished in 15th in the one mile with a time of 5:11.88 which was just .16 away from tying her PR.

–        Hudson Hall joined the PR party with a 4:13.49 in the men’s one mile which gave him a 14th place finish.

–        In his second collegiate meet, the freshman David Stukey nailed a PR of 1:57.49 and finished 11th in the 800 meter.

–        Another freshman made in impact as Braxton Sharp recorded a new PR in the 60 meter of 7.25.

The Skyhawks will get right back to work next week with the Bellarmine Open on Friday, Jan. 19.
