
JACKSON, Tenn. – Union University’s baseball program was picked to finish 12th by GSC coaches in the 2024 GSC Preseason Poll.
Looking at the new roster for the Bulldogs, Coach McGehee has added 13 new faces to the roster. Of those new faces, four are transfers and nine are first-year Bulldogs. This is Casey McGehee‘s second year as head coach of the Bulldogs. Riley Self, who joined Coach McGehee’s staff last year, is also in his second year as pitching coach. Union added graduate assistant coach Daniel Jones to the coaching staff first his first tenure as a Bulldog.
Big additions to the Bulldog roster include Jamal Allen, a native from Birmingham, Ala., where he prepped at Ramsay High School. Allen began his collegiate clear at Wallace State in Selma before playing a tenure at Xavier University of Louisiana and Dillard University. Allen was a 2023 GCAC Conference Champion (Dillard University) and also achieved the 2021 Black College World Series All-Tournament Second Team. In 2021 at Xavier, Allen had 40.2 innings pitched, 11 appearances, 1.79 ERA, and 32 scoreless innings.
Noah Toney is another key addition to the Bulldog roster. Toney is a transfer from Wallace Community College in Hanceville where he accumulated a 3.90 ERA his freshman season. He also hit .303 at the plate and helped lead his team to a conference championship and a #23 ranking in the DI NJCAA Top 25.
Union is returning ace Sam Poindexter. The lefty will once again lead the Union starting rotation. In 2023 Poindexter started 12 games and finished with a 4.07 ERA, 3 complete games, 84 innings pitched, 60 strikeouts, and a .236 BAA (batting average against).
Carson Chavies returns to the Bulldog line up in 2024 for his third year with the program. Chavies accumulated a .288 average, .402 OBP, 42 hits, 7 XBH, and 17 SB.
Union’s 2024 schedule features trips to Valdosta State University, the University of West Florida, the University of Alabama at Huntsville, Christian Brothers University, and the University of Auburn in Montgomery. Union will play host to Lee University, Shorter University, Delta State University, the University of West Alabama, and the University of Montevallo.
The Bulldogs will begin their season on the road next Friday in Young Harris, GA. The first game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
