Union Softball Sweeps Miles College In Midweek Doubleheader

JACKSON, Tenn. – On Feb. 21, the Union University softball team swept Miles College in their midweek doubleheader. In game one, the Lady Bulldogs won 6-0, and in game two, they run ruled Miles 13-3 in five innings. With the wins, Union’s record improves to 9-4, while Miles falls to 3-5.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in game one. Macey Neal doubled down the left field line to score Morgan Jennings who led off with a triple, and Zoey Neal hit a sacrifice fly to score Macey. Union went on to score a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the fourth, Macey tripled, driving in Sarah Kate Thompson and Jennings. In the fifth, Camryn Langley scored on a wild pitch, and in the sixth, Thompson scored again, this time on a fielder’s choice.

Jennings and Macey were each 3-4 in the game with Jennings scoring two runs and Macey scoring one run and driving in three. Brooke PuckettBryleigh CarnealZoey Neal, and Thompson also each had a hit in the game.

Emily Claire Felder got the start for the Lady Bulldogs, throwing five innings and allowing no runs while striking out seven. Riley Vaughn came in for two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two. With the win, Felder’s record improves to 3-2.

In game two, Union erupted in the first inning with the first four batters getting hits. Jennings led off with a single up the middle and stole second, followed by Macey Neal who singled to right field, driving in Jennings. Courtney Marler got a single of her own, putting runners at first and third. Zoey Neal came up big in the cleanup spot driving an 0-2 pitch over the center field fence for a three-run homerun. The Lady Bulldogs ultimately sent 12 hitters to the plate in the first inning and scored a total of eight runs. Union would go on to score four runs in the third and one run in the fourth. Miles showed life in the fifth inning, scoring three runs of their own, but were unable to score more as the Lady Bulldogs held on for the victory.

Union had 16 hits in the game. Four Lady Bulldogs had a multi-hit game, including Jennings who was 3-4, Macey Neal who was 3-3, Zoey Neal who was 2-3, and Mallory Hildebrand who was 2-3. Mackenzi DavidHailey SipesKira Finkley, Carneal, Langley, and Marler had a hit a piece in game two of the doubleheader.

Addison Abell picked up her first win of the season, throwing all five innings and giving up only three runs (two earned) on two hits while striking out three. Her record is now 1-0.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will play Delta State University at home in their second conference series of the season. Game one is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23 at 5:00 p.m. General admission for all home games is free courtesy of FirstBank.
