
Jackson, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team splits the first day of their GSC series with Valdosta State University. Coach McGehee’s squad won game one by a score of 4-3 and lost game two by a score of 7-4.
In the first game, Sam Poindexter got the call to the bump for the Bulldogs, and he did not disappoint. Poindexter threw 6.2 innings of 3-run baseball versus the Blazers of Valdosta State. Poindexter struck out 7 Valdosta State hitters in his first win of the season.
Union found themselves down 1-0 to the Blazers after Hunter Stowe doubled in Ryan Romano in the fourth inning. Despite allowing VSU to strike first, the Bulldogs scored four unanswered runs, two in the fifth and two in the seventh. Elijah Ramsey hit a single through the right side to score Will Allen Smith and then Blake Barrett hit into a fielder’s choice to score Carson Chavies in the fifth inning. Later on in the seventh inning, Ramsey reached by error to score Chavies and Grant Ross followed it up with a liner into center field to score Ramsey.
Despite Valdosta State’s effort to make a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ryan Evans shut down the Blazers to take home game one of the series. Ryan Evans received a save for finishing the final 2.1 innings.
In the second game of the evening, the Blazers got the best of Union, scoring seven runs on nine hits and two errors. Joseph Hufstedler, Jake Keyl, Ross, and Ramsey all recorded a run batted in.
