JACKSON, Tenn. – On Mar. 5, the eight-seed Union University men’s basketball team fell to the one-seed No. 13 University of West Georgia 87-76. With their loss, the Bulldogs find their season over, while the Wolves advance to the GSC Semifinals.
“I thought that our guys came out and were definitely ready to play,” Union head coach David Niven said. “Unfortunately, so many of the mistakes that have plagued us all year came up again in the second half. They’re [West Georgia] too good a team to overcome that stuff. But I’m proud of our team. I thought they played hard. We were coming in here to win, and I thought that was their mentality without a doubt.”
Ahmad Johnson led Union 17 points and also collected four rebounds and one assist. The Bulldogs led 43-39 at halftime but were outscored 48-33 in the second half as they ultimately lost by 11.
Devaki Garr, Jordan Pyke, and Jeremiah Littlepage each joined Johnson in double-digit points with Garr scoring 16, Pyke putting up 14, and Littlepage adding 11. Littlepage led in rebounds with 10, and Garr led in assists with four.
The Bulldogs shot 45 percent (27-60) from the field, 36.8 percent (7-19) from three-point range, and 78.9 percent (15-19) from the free throw line.
Zawdie Jackson led West Georgia with 36 points and four assists. The Wolves shot 40 percent (26-65) from the field, 30 percent (6-20) from three-point range, and 80.6 percent (29-36) from the free throw line.
With their season over, Niven and the Bulldogs will now turn their focus to the 2024-25 season in which they will look to build on what they accomplished this year.
