Union Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Delta State In GSC Quarterfinals

JACKSON, Tenn. – On Mar. 5, the No. 5/11 Union University women’s basketball team won their GSC Quarterfinals matchup against Delta State University 90-71. Union is the two-seed in the tournament, while Delta State was the seven-seed. With their win, the Lady Bulldogs advance to the semifinals, and the Lady Statesmen see their season end.

Shanique Lucas led Union with 17 points and also added two assists and three rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs were ahead 32-15 after the first quarter and scored 19 in the second to go up 51-29 at the half. Delta State outscored Union 26-20 in the third quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs held on by scoring another 19 in the fourth to seal the victory.

Every Union player that entered the game scored at least two points with Macey LeeJazalyn AnousinhLeah Cauble, and Brooke Hampel each joining Lucas in double-digit points. Emma Kallas led in rebounds with 10, and Anousinh and Lee led in assists with four apiece.

The Lady Bulldogs shot 40.5 percent (32-79) from the field, 34.1 percent (15-44) from three-point range, and 84.6 percent (11-13) from the free throw line.

Grace Watson led Delta State with 16 points and nine rebounds. The Lady Statesmen shot 45.8 percent (22-48) from the field, 52.9 percent (9-17) from three-point range, and 75 percent (18-24) from the free throw line.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the GSC Semifinals where they will face the three-seed Lee University. Tipoff is scheduled for Mar. 9 at 2:15 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.
