Union Softball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader With Shorter

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team won both games of their doubleheader today versus Shorter University to move to 16-9 overall (9-5 GSC).

Lainey Baker (6-4) got the call in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs. Baker received the win in game one of the double-header. Baker twirled a gem, throwing a complete game for Union. Baker struck out 12 Shorter batters on the way to her sixth win of the season in the circle.

In the first game, the Lady Bulldogs got off to a hot start in the first inning, starting with a single from Macey Neal that brought in Morgan JenningsCourtney Marler split the gap in right-center for a stand-up double, giving Union runners at second and third with no one out. Macey Neal came in on a wild pitch, giving Union a 2-0 lead. Zoey Neal, the Union three-hole hitter, smoked a single up the middle, putting the lady Bulldogs up 3-0.

Fast forwarding to the fifth inning, Mackenzi David brought home Courtney Marler with a sacrifice fly, giving Union a four-run lead late over Shorter. Jennings, M. Neal, Z. Neal, and Puckett all collected hits in Union’s game one victory.

In the second game, Riley Vaughn (6-1) got the ball for the Lady Bulldogs. The sophomore righty collected her sixth win of the season, throwing a complete game shutout versus Shorter. Vaughn collected 14 strikeouts, a season-high for Vaughn.

Union broke through first in the second inning, scoring off of a single from Bryleigh Carneal and Sarah Kate Thompson. Shorter committed two errors in the inning, helping to bring in Kira Finkley and Carneal. Union held a 2-0 lead going into the top of the third inning.

In the fourth inning, Union added on with a run off a pair of Shorter errors and a loud double from M. Neal. Neal brought around Jennings in the fourth and then hit a long two-run homer to give Union a 6-0 lead heading into the final inning of play.

Camryn Langley, M. Neal, Z. Neal, David, Carneal, and Thompson all collected a hit in the second game of the Satuerday doubleheader.
