
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference released its 2023-24 Winter Academic Awards including the sport of basketball. Union women’s basketball graduate student, Shanique Lucas, was named GSC All-Academic, while 18 Union basketball players earned GSC Honor Roll status.
The All-Academic teams are voted on and include sophomores and above with at least a 3.2 GPA and have had significant impacts on the court. The GSC Honor Roll includes all student-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA at the time of submission that have competed in outside competition.
Lucas, a 5-foot-8 guard from Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, helped Union to a second place GSC regular season finish and third place in the GSC Tournament. Lucas was named GSC All-Tournament, First Team All-GSC, D2CCA First Team All-Region, and GSC Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 20. On the season, she averaged 12.2 points per game and passed 300 career steals, collecting a total of 97. She added 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. She shot 49.7 percent from the field and hit 47 3-pointers.
Thirteen players from the women’s basketball team were named to the honor roll. These included Jazalyn Anousinh, Bethany Dillard, Macey Lee, Keisharna Lucas, Olivia Lee, Shanique Lucas, Anna McCredy, Shylee Morrison, Kieli Robinson, Courtney Zensen, Leah Cauble, Brooke Hampel, and Emma Kallas.
The men’s team had five players make the honor roll including Justin DeBuck, Will Jackson, Luke Ledbetter, Jordan Pyke, and Dusan Djordjevic.
