
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – There was improved scoring all around for the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team today as the Skyhawks completed Round 3 of the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club.
Four of UT Martin’s five members of the scoring lineup shot their best rounds of the tournament. That list included sophomore Luke Caldwell’s 71 which included a team-best four birdies. The Cookeville, Tenn. native was bogey-free and sat at 4-under par through the first 15 holes of the day.
Jacob Uehlein (two birdies) and Jonathan Xoinis (three birdies plus the Skyhawks’ only eagle of the day) each finished their round with a 75 today. Dax Isbell’s 77 included three birdies and rounded out UT Martin’s team scoring while Ethan Ray posted a birdie and 14 pars on the way to a 78. Competing as an individual, Grant Phillips tallied an 81 with a birdie.
The Skyhawks trimmed 15 strokes off their previous best score of the tournament during today’s final round, compiling a 298 (+10). Overall, UT Martin shot a 928 (+64) for the 54-hole event, finishing with the most eagles (three) in the tournament.
Uehlein and Isbell each finished with a 231 (+15) to tie for the team lead in the tournament. Phillips shot a 233 (+17) and was followed by Caldwell (234, +18), Xoinis (235, +19) and Ray (241, +25).
Isbell and Caldwell were both responsible for team-best 3.25 (+3) par-3 scoring averages while Phillips led the way in par-4 scoring average (4.23, +7) and pars (34). Xoinis’ 5.08 (+1) par-5 scoring average was a team-best in that category and Isbell’s eight birdies ranked atop the Skyhawk standings.
UT Martin now faces a quicker than usual turnaround, taking part in the 2024 Ohio Valley Conference Championships on Sunday, April 21 through Wednesday, April 24. This year’s event returns to Muscle Shoals, Ala. and will be played on the Fighting Joe course at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
