JACKSON, Tenn. – On Friday night, Union University hosted the University of Montevallo in the first game of a three-game set. The Bulldogs came out victorious 2-1 thanks to an outstanding performance from Eli Snelson and a clutch two-strike knock from Mitch Sisk. Union improves to 16-24 (10-15 GSC) after their latest late-inning victory.
Eli Snelson got the nod in the opener of senior weekend. The Junior out of Hartselle, Ala. was on his game, tossing a complete game, three-hit gem versus the Falcons. Snelson struck out eight Montevallo batters on the way to securing his fourth victory of the season.
Union’s offense tallied two runs on nine hits in the win over Montevallo. The Bulldogs tallied two extra-base hits in the contest, coming off the bats of Alec Hardy and Sisk. Elijah Ramsey, Canyon Pace, Dyllon Barrett, Will Allen Smith, Hardy, and Sisk all collected at least a hit.
Snelson held the Falcons scoreless through eight innings before giving up a homer to lead off the top of the ninth inning. With the little he had left in the tank, he navigated the Bulldogs to the home half of the ninth for a chance to knock off the No. 5 team in the GSC. Dyllon Barrett got the ‘dogs in business, driving the ball to right field for a single. Barrett then stole second to give the Bulldogs a runner in scoring position with two outs in the inning. Carson Chavies then walked on a pitch clock violation, followed by a Grant Ross hit by pitch to set up Sisk to come through in the clutch. After falling behind in an 0-2 count, the Senior third-baseman roped a liner through the middle, scoring Barrett and sending his team into a frenzy down the right field line.
Union will look to continue their magic tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. (DH). Senior day is scheduled to take place on the field before the second game of the doubleheader.
