
VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Union University men’s golf team posted a third place finish at the 2024 Gulf South Conference Golf Championships. The 3-round event is being played at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club and features 10 teams with 53 golfers.
The third place finish for the Union men’s golf team tied the best finish in GSC play with the 2013 team. Union was not eligible for postseason play that year during the membership transition period.
Union finished third behind the GSC Champion West Florida 5-over team score. Lee finished second at 18-over. Union was 20-over par. Union shot the second best round of the final round with a 296. Union’s second round 292 was the best of the second round.
Gray Campbell was Union’s top golfer in fifth place at 3-over par for the tournament. The sophomore for Union hot a 73 in the first round, a 71, including back-to-back eagles, in the second round and a 75 in the final round. Campbell was named GSC All-Tournament for his top-5 finish.
JJ Zimmer finished in a tie for sixth place at 4-over par wit rounds of 74, 74, 72. He jumped four spots with his final round 72.
Daniel Maybee was just outside the top-10 with a 12th place finish at 7-over (78, 72, 73). Timothy Pinkston finished T18 at 11-over (76, 75, 76), and Trace Robinson T27 at 15-over (73, 80, 78).
Up next for Union is an expected trip to the NCAA D2 South/Southeast Region Championships. This would mark the first trip to the NCAA D2 Regional Championships for a golf team at Union since joining the NCAA in 2012-13. Union’s JJ Zimmer qualified for the NCAA D2 Regional each of the last two years as an individual. Union is ranked No. 9 in the latest NCAA D2 South Region Rankings and finished ahead of sixth ranked Shorter University in the conference tournament.
