Union Softball Drops First Matchup Of GSC Tournament

JACKSON, Tenn. – On May 1, the Union University softball team lost 4-2 to the University of West Florida in the opening game of the GSC Championships. With the loss, Union falls to 28-22 overall, while West Florida improves to 36-14 overall.

The Lady Bulldogs struck first when Courtney Marler reached on an error in the first inning to allow Macey Neal to score. Two batters later Brooke Puckett smoked a double down the left field line, driving in Marler and giving Union a 2-0 lead. West Florida tied the game in the third inning and took the lead in the sixth when Jessica Ford hit a solo homerun. The Argos scored another run in the sixth to make it 4-2 with that being the final score.

The Union offense combined for six hits with Puckett leading the way by going 2-3. Morgan JenningsMacey NealBryleigh Carneal, and Marler added a hit apiece.

Riley Vaughn pitched all six innings for Union, giving up four runs on six hits and nine walks while striking out four.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs face the University of West Alabama on May 2 at 10:00 a.m. in a must-win game.
