JACKSON, Tenn. – Union and Christian Brothers played to a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex to open the GSC campaign for both teams.

The Bulldogs (3-1-1, 0-0-1 GSC) improved to 3-12-3 against CBU over the course of their Gulf South affiliation.

CBU (2-2-1, 0-0-1) was awarded a penalty in the 11th minute, but the attempt to the right side of the net was stopped by Union keeper Patrick Schott, who finished the night with three saves.

The Bucs took a short-lived advantage at 38:14 on an unassisted breakaway goal by Daniel Moreno Gomez, his second of the year. Five minutes later, as the ball ricocheted around CBU’s box in a bit of disorganized play, it found the foot of Christian Harjanne, who scored his first goal of the season. Cillian Heaney and Diego Medina were credited with assists. Union now has 10 assists on 10 goals.

The second half proved offensively futile for both teams. Only two shots on target – both by CBU – were recorded in the latter 45 minutes. The Bucs out-shot Union in the game 12-3 (4-2 on goal).

Union’s defense has shone thus far, holding opponents to one or fewer goals in four of five matches. The team’s mark of 1.00 goals allowed per game is third in the conference behind AUM (.25) and Lee (.80).

Montevallo (2-1-2) is the only other GSC team to have played five matches and not lost twice.

Union will complete its four-match homestand Champion Christian College on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
