
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lane College volleyball team took part in the SIAC Western Crossover this weekend at the Memphis Event Center and the Dragons took down the Tigers of Edward Waters University. It was the first time in program history that Lane beat EWU.
It was a back-and-forth affair as the teams swapped sets throughout the match. Lane earned the early lead with a 30-28 victory in set one. The Tigers would bounce back to take set two (25-21) while the Dragons won set three (25-19). Edward Waters raced out to an early lead in set four a cruised to a win (25-16) to even the match and send it to a decisive set five.
After giving up the first two points in the fifth set, Lane went on a 8-1 run to take a commanding lead at the halfway point of the set. EWU would claw their way back into contention over the second half of the final stanza, but Malaya Young and Jadyn Powell would slam the door shut with a huge block to earn Lane a 15-12 victory.
Shaniah Jones had a career afternoon for the Dragons. She registered a career high 45 assists for Lane while also registering nine digs, an ace, and a block assist in the win.
Kyra Gaston paced the attack for Lane, earning 18 kills and 20 total points. Kristina Lichtenhan finished with 14.5 points while Powell ended with 13.5.
Powell and Lichtenhan ended with a team-high 13 digs each.
The Dragons will travel to LeMoyne-Owen next Saturday for a match up with their division rivals. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
