MARTIN, Tenn.– The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team went toe-to-toe with conference unbeaten Lindenwood this afternoon at Skyhawk Field but fell 2-1 at the final horn.
Izzy Patterson scored her third goal of the season in the 74th minute, leading the team in shots with four while also targeting three attempts on goal. Makayla Robinson had three shots while Abbie McHenry (one assist, two shots, one on goal), Peyton Cook (one shot), Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles (one shot), Alberte Amby (one shot), Anna Østergaard Ibsen (one shot), Shayla Addington (one shot on goal) and Parker Gelinas (one shot on goal) contributed to the UT Martin offensive attack.
The Skyhawks (2-9-3, 1-5-0 Ohio Valley Conference) used the duo of Mac Titus (45 minutes, five saves) and Jordyn Riffle (45 minutes, three saves) in goal. Ella Rucka, Brooke Kala, Patterson, Gelinas, Addington and McHenry played the full contest for UT Martin.
Lindenwood (8-4-2, 4-0-2 OVC) struck quick in the match with two goals in an eight-minute span early in the first half. Anna Johnson got the scoring started in the seventh minute and then Lily Sutter scored on a second chance opportunity in the 14th minute.
Despite a 2-0 deficit at the halftime break, the Skyhawks nearly matched the visiting Lions shot-for-shot in the first 45 minutes (nine attempts to Lindenwood’s 10). McHenry and Patterson each had a shot on goal in the opening half but the Lions were there for a pair of saves.
Addington (50th minute), Gelinas (63rd minute) and Patterson (71st minute) all recorded shots on goal in the second half before UT Martin broke through for a score. Patterson took a feed from McHenry and launched a ball to the top right corner with her left foot to bring trim the Skyhawk deficit to one with just over 15 minutes remaining.
Although that would be the final UT Martin shot on goal of the afternoon, the Skyhawks stayed within striking distance because of some clutch play at goalkeeper by Riffle. The sophomore out of Amelia, Ohio snared saves in the 51st, 65th and 66th minutes before Patterson’s score to give UT Martin a chance at the end.
Up next, the Skyhawks head to Macomb, Ill. to square off against Western Illinois on Thursday, Oct. 17. First touch on ESPN+ is set for 3 p.m.
