BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Victoria Markham of the Union women’s cross country team has been named the GSC Runner of the Week for her third-place performance at the Watson Invitational on Friday.
Markham finished with a time of 22:45 in the 6000-meter race, just 13 seconds faster than teammate Addi Aguayo. The pair of sophomores led Union to a third-place team finish among a field of 23 schools that included Division I competition such as Louisiana Tech (fourth place) and TAMU-Commerce (fifth).
Markham’s finishing time bested her other 6k result this season, a 23:35 pace at the Rhodes Invitational on September 21. She has led Union runners in all four of the team’s races this season.
Markham adds this award to her growing collection of GSC honors, including two Freshman of the Week recognitions (9/6/23 and 10/4/23) and a 2023 Second Team All-GSC selection.
With the award, Union has won its first women’s cross country Runner of the Week laurel since Janey Berends claimed the honor in October 2016. In the meantime, the team has earned nine Freshman of the Week titles.
Markham and her Lady Bulldogs will compete next at the GSC Championships on Saturday in Clinton, Mississippi.
