JACKSON, Tenn. – In the regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon, Union University women’s soccer beat Lee 2-0, clinching the third seed in the GSC Championship.
Union’s total of eight GSC wins is a new program best, while nine victories overall is the most since 2011.
Union scored two goals in minutes 11 and 19 and posted its fifth shutout of the season, beating the Lady Flames for the first time in program history. Lee led the game in shots, 11-9, but few were competitive attempts, and Union keeper Kirsten LaVallee was only required to make two saves.
Claire Maxon cashed her third goal and second game-winner of the season at 10:39, sending a shot from 20 yards out across the box and into the bottom-right corner of the net. Sophie Walsh was credited with the assist.
Just eight minutes later, Rebekah Jackson doubled the home advantage with a shot of her own from distance. After Lee gave the ball away, Jackson collected it just past midfield and fired a 30-yard strike over three Lee defenders and into the top left of the net.
Union’s goals came on the first two shots of the game.
Only one of Lee’s nine shots in the second half reached LaVallee, as the Lady Flames never made a compelling case to get back in the game.
Claire Maxon took three of Union’s five shots on goal, while Lucia Revuelto had another.
Union will host Delta State in its quarterfinal match on Sunday, November 10, at 1:00 p.m.
