UT Martin Women’s Basketball Falls In Overtime To Fresno State

HONOLULU, Hawai’i – It took overtime to decide the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball team’s final game of the 2024 American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Classic Sunday, but ultimately Fresno State got the better of the Skyhawks, 75-66, at the SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

UT Martin led by eight at halftime, 32-24, but Fresno State dominated the third quarter and outscored the Skyhawks in the frame, 27-13. However, UT Martin bounced back in the fourth quarter erasing an 11-point deficit to take a two-point lead with 35 seconds left in regulation on a 3-pointer by Shae Littleford.

Just seconds later Fresno State tied the game on two free throws from Danae Powell with 26 seconds left to play. With the shot clock off, the Skyhawks had two chances for the win but neither one fell, sending the game to overtime. In overtime, the Bulldogs controlled the frame from start to finish, outscoring UT Martin, 13-4, to seal the win.

The Skyhawks led for over 20 of Sunday’s game and finished the contest shooting 46.9-percent from the floor and 42-percent from 3-point range. However, the difference in the game proved to be the Bulldogs 23 points off turnovers compared to five by UT Martin.

Five Skyhawks reached double-digits in the game led by Daejah Richmond’s 14 points off the bench. Kaitlyn McCarn was next in line with 13, while Anaya Brown and Littleford had 12 points each and Kenley McCarn added 11. Lexi Rubel also turned in a big performance Sunday with team-highs of eight rebounds and six assists, to go along with two points.

The Skyhawks return to action Thursday when they travel to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana to take on Butler at 6 p.m.
