
JACKSON, Tenn. – On Thursday night, the No. 20/RV Union University women’s basketball team won their first GSC game of the season 85-59 against Delta State University. The victory improves Union’s overall record to 5-2 overall (1-0 GSC), while it drops Delta State to 4-3 overall (0-1 GSC).
The score was just 10-10 with 4:41 minutes remaining in the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs went on a 13-3 run to go into the second ahead 23-13, led by four points from senior Jazalyn Anousinh and five from freshman Aryn Roberts. Both Delta State and Union scored 18 points in the second quarter, making the score 41-31 at halftime. However, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Statesmen 26-17 in the third quarter and 18-11 in the fourth to clinch the win with their biggest lead being 26 points.
Three Union players scored season highs, including Alexis Callins with 17 points, Anousinh with 13, and Roberts with 10. Macey Lee, Olivia Lee, and Anousinh each grabbed three rebounds to lead the team, while Courtney Zensen, Emily Jones, Olivia Lee, and Callins had two assists apiece to top that category. Union shot 46.9 percent (30-64) from the field, 50 percent (7-14) from behind the arc, and 85.7 percent (18-21) from the free throw line.
Delta State’s Madi Kate Vuncannon went 6-9 from three-point range to lead her team with 18 points. The Statesmen shot 43.1 percent (22-51) from the field, 47.1 percent (8-17) from behind the arc, and 87.5 percent (7-8) from the free throw line.
