Union Women’s Basketball Edges Alabama-Huntsville

JACKSON, Tenn. – On Thursday night, the No. 13/RV Union University women’s basketball team defeated the University of Alabama in Huntsville 66-62 to improve their GSC record to 6-0 and their overall record to 11-2. Union sits in the number one spot in the GSC standings and is the only team still unbeaten in conference play. With the loss, UAH drops to third place in the standings with their overall record being 10-3 (5-2 GSC).

The game was the closest Union has had against a GSC opponent so far this season. The lead changed 10 times and featured nine ties. Although the Lady Bulldogs had the advantage for over 32 minutes, the largest lead they were able to earn was nine points, which came when Olivia Lee sunk a three-pointer at the 3:33 second mark in the fourth quarter to put the team ahead 63-54.

The third quarter was key for the Lady Bulldogs in the contest as they made five of their 10 three-pointers in the period to outscore the Chargers 20-17. Macey Lee provided three of these makes, while Alexis Callins and Olivia Lee added one each. Macey LeeOlivia LeeShylee Morrison, and Callins were Union’s top scorers, putting up 15 points, 11 points, 11 points, and 19 points, respectively.

Olivia Lee and Callins each shot 6-10 from the field, while Lee went 3-5 from behind the arc and Callins went 3-7. Union was one free throw short of a perfect night from the foul line with Jazalyn Anousinh going 2-2, Courtney Zensen 1-2, Callins 4-4, and Morrison 5-5.

Olivia Lee and Zensen grabbed five rebounds apiece to top that category, followed by Morrison with four. Anousinh dished out five assists to bring her season total to 53. Morrison had the most steals, matching her rebound total with four.

Union outshot the Chargers from the field (44.9 percent to 39.7 percent), from beyond the arc (35.7 percent to 24 percent), and from the free throw line (92.3 percent to 71.4 percent). However, UAH forced 18 Union turnovers to their own 15. Eighteen turnovers is the most the Lady Bulldogs have committed in conference play this season and ties for second-most this season overall.

Alexis Woods led UAH in scoring with 15 points, while Mia Hollingsworth, Lili Wilken, and Bella White added nine each. White was one point shy of a double-double as she grabbed an impressive 12 rebounds in the game.

Up next, Union will face the University of West Alabama at home on Jan. 4. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
