Union Women’s Basketball Crushes Christian Brothers

JACKSON, Tenn. – On Thursday night, the No. 18/16 Union University women’s basketball team topped Christian Brothers University 98-55. The Lady Bulldogs also won their game against CBU earlier in the season, making them 2-0 against the Lady Bucs. Union continues to hold the best record in the Gulf South Conference at 18-3 overall (13-1 GSC), while CBU drops to 0-19 overall (0-14 GSC).

After the first quarter, Union led only 28-23. However, a 30-point second quarter and 28-point third quarter allowed them to virtually put the game away. In those two periods, the Lady Bulldogs combined for 23-48 shooting from the field, including 10 makes from beyond the arc. Four of these threes came from Emily Jones, who led Union with 19 points. This was her 10th double-digit effort this season.

Alexis CallinsOlivia Lee, and Bethany Dillard joined Jones in double digits in the contest with 17, 12, and 11, respectively. Lee also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to earn the first double-double of her college career. Courtney Zensen led Union in both rebounds and steals. Her 12 boards were a career high, and her four steals were a season high. Freshman Annie Buisson had three rebounds of her own, a career high.

Olivia LeeJazalyn AnousinhJeremia Montgomery, and Jones all dished out four assists in the game. For Lee, this was a career high, and for Jones, it tied her season high. Both Macey Lee and Jones put up two blocks in the game. Two blocks is Jones’s season high and ties Lee’s career high.

As a team, Union shot 42 percent (37-88) from the field, 31.5 percent (17-54) from three-point range, and 100 percent (7-7) from the foul line.

Jada Hood led the Lady Bucs with 14 points and five assists. Overall, CBU shot 30.9 percent (21-68) from the field, 23.1 percent (6-26) from behind the arc, and 50 percent (7-14) from the free throw line.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will face the University of Montevallo in Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. This will be the two teams’ second matchup of the season after Union won 71-65 on Dec. 21 at Montevallo.
