BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the third time in 2024-25, a University of Tennessee at Martin representative has earned Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week honors for men’s basketball as the league announced that Josué Grullon received that award today.
Grullon also won the award on Nov. 11 while his backcourt teammate Tarence Guinyard claimed the honor on Dec. 16. Grullon becomes only the 18th player in school history to win multiple OVC Newcomer of the Week honors.
A guard out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Grullon averaged team-highs of 22.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per outing last week against the likes of Southeast Missouri and Little Rock. He shot a scorching 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from three-point range while knocking down all 14 of his free throw attempts.
On Thursday at Southeast Missouri, Grullon erupted for a career-best 31 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds in 28 minutes. He was 5-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc and was a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe, which was just two makes shy of the program record for best individual free throw performance in a single game.
Two days later at Little Rock, Grullon generated team-bests of 14 points and nine rebounds – equaling a career-high in the latter category. The 6-5, 195-pound junior also added two assists and two steals in 27 minutes of playing time.
Grullon currently ranks third in the OVC in three-point field goals made (2.7 per outing), three-point field goal percentage (.373), seventh in scoring (14.7 points per contest) and seventh in field goal percentage (.422).
The Skyhawks host a pair of OVC opponents this week, taking on Lindenwood (Thursday, Feb. 6) and Western Illinois (Saturday, Feb. 8) at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
