Union Baseball Drops 3 Of 4 To UVA Wise

WISE, Va. – The Union University baseball team dropped three of four games in a weekend series at UVA Wise on Saturday and Sunday, denting the Bulldog record to 3-4 after a season-opening series win at Limestone.

After conceding the first three games of the set by scores of 4-3, 6-2 and 6-3, the Bulldogs took the final matchup 13-3. All four games were seven-inning affairs.

UVA Wise (9-1) won the series opener in walk-off fashion before scoring four runs in the first inning of game two. The Cavaliers pounced again early in the third game, plating five between frames one and two.

Union collected 10 hits and five walks in game four and benefited from three UVA Wise errors. Carson Chavies and Colby Davis, who respectively hit a home run and a triple, each compiled a two-hit game.

Grant Ross did the same in game three, in which the first baseman hit a double.

Chavies posted a 1.280 OPS over four starts, going 4-11 with a triple, a home run, and two walks. Through two weekends, the Union senior leads the GSC in slugging (1.000) and OPS (1.625); he is one of two competitors in the league with multiple triples.

Briant Bazydlo pitched 4.1 effective innings of relief in game three, allowing just one run and striking out five after starter Carter Daniel was chased from the game early. Through 7.1 innings over three relief appearances, Bazydlo has a 1.23 ERA.

Next, the Bulldogs will return to Jackson for their home- and conference-opener against Valdosta State. Union will face the Blazers first on Friday with a 4:00 p.m. single game and then in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
