Union Women’s Basketball Crushes Montavello In GSC Quarter-Finals

JACKSON, Tenn. – On Tuesday night, the No. 12/11 Union University women’s basketball team won 87-38 over the University of Montevallo in the quarterfinal round of the Truist GSC Championship. Union’s 49-point win is the second-largest margin of victory in GSC tournament history. The Lady Bulldogs are now 27-3 overall (22-1 GSC), while the Falcons finish the season with an 11-17 overall record (9-13 GSC).

Union took the lead at the 9:49 second mark in the first quarter courtesy of a Macey Lee three-pointer and never looked back. The team took a 47-8 lead into halftime and added 21 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth to seal the win. The Lady Bulldogs outshot the Falcons 38.9 percent to 25.5 percent from the field, 26.2 percent to 9.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 87 percent to 58.8 percent from the foul line. Union also forced 30 Montevallo turnovers to their own 15.

Five Lady Bulldogs scored double digits in the contest, including Olivia Lee with 15 points, Alexis Callins with 13, Macey Lee with 12, and Jeremia Montgomery and Emily Jones with 11 each. In addition to scoring the most points, Olivia Lee also led the team in rebounds with 11, giving her the second double-double of her career. Both double-doubles have come this season. Montgomery dished out four assists to lead the team, and Macey Lee and Bethany Dillard each grabbed four steals.

Elisa Saffold led the Falcons with 10 points, and she and Aubrey Sorrells grabbed seven boards apiece. Ramie Reid followed Saffold with seven points scored.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face the 4-seed University of West Florida in the GSC semifinals. Tipoff is scheduled for Mar. 8 at 12:00 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.
