MARTIN, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team fell in Game 2 of the weekend series to Samford, 11-1 at Skyhawk Field.
Arderrius Townsend led the Skyhawks (5-8) in hits with two while TJ Grines (one hit, one walk), Tommy Koch (one hit, one run scored, one walk), Brody Capps (one stolen base, one RBI), Jalen Fithian (one walk, one stolen base), Garner Anderson (one walk) and Jordan Hudson (one walk) also reached base.
Drake Bayles (2-1) went five innings striking out five Bulldogs with Austin Gast (0.1 innings pitched), Kaleb Baskin (1.2 innings pitched, no runs allowed, no walks, one strikeout) and Brock Arender (one inning pitched) following him with appearances out of the bullpen.
Bayles worked swiftly through the first inning forcing a groundout and back-to-back flyouts, respectively. Two walks to start the second wouldn’t faze the righty after he got a strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out and then a flyout to close the inning.
Bayles whiffed two more batters and induced a groundout to sit down Samford (8-7) in order in the third. The Bulldogs were able to punch through in the next two innings with six runs.
UT Martin got a run back in the home half of the fifth from a bases loaded hit by pitch on Capps and Baskin pitched a clean seventh inning, but the Skyhawks were unable to pull off the comeback.
UT Martin will be at Skyhawk Field tomorrow for the series finale on ESPN+ at 1 p.m.
