BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Union University women’s basketball won its seventh GSC tournament title and 32nd overall conference tournament championship in program history on Sunday afternoon in a 58-52 win over the University of Alabama Huntsville in Samford University’s Pete Hanna Center.
Union improves to 29-3 this season, 25-4 in GSC tournament games, and 7-1 in GSC title games. The Lady Bulldogs have won five of the last six GSC tournaments.
Macey Lee was honored as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, while Courtney Zensen was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Lee led Union with a season-high 19 points and seven rebounds on 7-for-11 shooting and 4-of-7 from three–her most made three-point field goals in a Lady Bulldog uniform. The fifth-year player added two assists, two blocks, and three steals to her stat line, while Jazalyn Anousinh followed her six-assist performance with a half-dozen more against UAH. GSC Player of the Year Lili Wilken scored 22 for the Chargers.
Union took a 24-20 lead to halftime after 20 level minutes that featured six lead changes and four ties. Union began the third quarter on a 10-0 run—within a 19-4 run between the halves–and raced to a 14-point lead, its largest of the game. Jazalyn Anousinh followed her six-assist performance on Saturday with a half-dozen more
UAH gradually clawed back and narrowed the deficit to two points with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before a Bethany Dillard three-pointer at 0:40 gave Union a 54-49 lead. The Chargers outscored Union 15-6 between the four-minute mark of the third quarter and the 6:10 mark in the fourth, cutting the lead to 46-43. UAH led for just 44 seconds in the contest–never past the eight-minute mark of the second period and never by more than two points.
The Lady Bulldogs shot .350 from the floor and .250 (8-32) from beyond the arc but held the Chargers to an equal three-point rate (7-28) and .345 overall shooting. UAH committed only 15 turnovers, the third fewest by a Union opponent this season, but induced just 10 from Union.
Union won a game while scoring fewer than 60 points for the first time since March 2023.
The Lady Bulldogs move to 26-2 all-time against the Charges and 2-0 in GSC tournament action. Union has won the last 11 games in the series.
Union and UAH (25-6) will hear their names called in tonight’s NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Selection Show, which will air at 9:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
