JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women’s basketball team has earned the No. 1 seed and the right to host the 2025 NCAA D2 WBB Championship, South Region Tournament. Union earned the Gulf South Conference’s automatic bid after winning the 2025 GSC Women’s Basketball Title in Birmingham, Ala. March 9.
For Union, it was the seventh GSC Title in program history and fifth in the last six years. Union also took the GSC Regular Season title this season.
Union is making its 10th NCAA D2 Women’s Basketball National Championship appearance in the 11 years since becoming postseason eligible in 2014-15. It will be Union’s fifth time as the No. 1 seed and host for the region tournament. Union is 9-6 in those 10 years (no games in 2020) and won its only regional title in 2018. Union has a pair of runner-up finishes in 2015 and 2022.
In 2025, Union will open play against the SIAC Tournament Champion, Miles College, on Friday, March 14, at 5 p.m. The region semifinals will be Saturday, with the championship game on Monday, March 17, at 7 p.m.
Joining Union in the field of eight teams will be three of its GSC foes. Lee University will be the 5-seed, Alabama Huntsville will be the 6-seed, and West Florida will be the 7-seed. Sunshine Conference members Embry-Riddle (2-seed), Nova Southeastern (3-seed), and Tampa (4-seed) finish out the field. Tampa has won back-to-back region titles. West Florida (2017), Union (2018), and Valdosta State (2022) are the only GSC schools to win the south region in the past 11 seasons.
