JACKSON, Tenn.– Union University improves to 3-2-1 overall (1-1 GSC) after defeating Delta State 2-1 Friday night. Delta State falls to 2-4-1 overall (0-2-1 GSC).

In the matchup, Union led the statesmen in team shots (10) and saves (2). Both teams tallied three shots on goal.

Union trailed at the end of the first half following a goal in the 48‘ by Delta State’s Arturo Riestra (assisted by Zach Storey). After a very physical first half that featured four yellow cards, the Bulldogs found their rhythm offensively. Stan De Vries led on the attack with his first two goals of the season. The first goal came in the 65′, and was assisted by Kenny Nitzsche (1) and Alpay Altuntas (2). De Vries’ second goal found the back of the net in the 73, seemingly halting any Statesman momentum. On the goal, Alpay Altuntas sent a beautiful cross from the left side of the attacking zone to De Vries on the right side of the box for the assist. De Vries finished the attack with nifty footwork in the box and a powerful left foot into the upper left corner of the net.

Union’s defense was up for the task of stopping a speedy Delta State attack. Botond Nemeth, with the help of his defensive zone, secured two key saves helping the Bulldogs secure the victory.

Union will look to continue their success Sunday, September 24th versus Mississippi College. The game is located at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex and will take place at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free courtesy of FirstBank.
