
MURRAY, Ky. – Graduate Nick Fares set a career-high in smallbore scoring and topped the University of Tennessee at Martin rifle squad in aggregate points as the Skyhawks started the 2023-24 campaign today at Murray State.
As a team, UT Martin posted 4,612 combined points following scores of 2,305 in smallbore and 2,307 in air rifle. The host Racers collected a score of 4,695 behind scores of 2,330 points in smallbore and 2,365 in air rifle.
Fares was one of three Skyhawks to record career-high scores during today’s season opener. Jesse Chamberlain’s 564 in smallbore was a new personal-best while freshman Aubrey Summers’ collegiate debut included career-highs of 549 points in smallbore and 567 in air rifle.
UT Martin’s smallbore lineup included a team-best 582 points from Alayna Walther as well as Fares’ aforementioned 580, a solid 579 from Joey Kovach, Chamberlain’s career-high 564 and Jeffrey Bourassa’s 560.
In air rifle, the Skyhawks boasted a scoring lineup of Fares (team-best 590 points), Walther (583), Kovach (567), Summers’ previously mentioned 567 and Bourassa (560). Chamberlain also took part in air rifle as an individual, recording a score of 550 points.
Fares led UT Martin with 1,170 aggregate points while Walther (1,165) trailed closely behind. Kovach dialed up 1,146 points and was followed by a tight pack of Bourassa (1,117), Summers (1,116) and Chamberlain (1,114).
The Skyhawks head back to Murray, Ky. next Sunday, Oct. 8 when they take on Morehead State in a neutral-site matchup. The match will begin at 9 a.m. in Pat Spurgin Rifle Range.
