Union Women’s Basketball Cruises In First Game In Puerto Rico

JACKSON, Tenn. – On Nov. 10, the Union University women’s basketball defeated the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon 118-62. This is the second most points in a game for the Lady Bulldogs since Union joined the NCAA (119 versus Fisk University in December 2019). With their win, Union, ranked No. 17 in the WBCA and D2CSC preseason polls, improved to 3-0 on the season.

Brooke Hampel led the way for Union with 20 points and four rebounds. Union jumped out early, dominating the first quarter 32-23. The Lady Bulldogs led 69-39 at the half. Union added 27 points in the third quarter and added 22 points in the fourth to cruise to the win.

Four Lady Bulldogs joined Hampel in double figures, including Courtney Zensen and Lauren West with 17 points each, Olivia Lee with 14 points, and Leah Cauble with 12 points. Eleven players scored for Union. Jazalyn Anousinh had 8 assists. Union 53.2 percent (41-77) from the field, 46.3 percent (19-41) from 3-point range, and 73.9 percent (17-23) from the free throw line.

Abeliz Rodriguez and Illadian Vazquez led Puerto Rico-Bayamon with 13 points apiece. Puerto Rico-Bayamon shot 44.4 percent (28-63) from the field, 14.3 percent (3-21) from behind the arc, and 33.3 percent (3-9) from the free throw line.
