
JACKSON, Tenn. – The No. 6/16 Union University women’s basketball team defeats the University of Alabama at Huntsville by a final score of 97-47. Union’s record improves to 15-1 (9-1 GSC) while Alabama at Huntsville’s record falls to 6-7 (5-5 GSC).
The Lady Bulldog’s offense found its rhythm late in the first period, scoring 21 points in the final four minutes of action. The top-scoring offense in the country connected from beyond the arc six times, three of which came from Lauren West. West came into the game today ranking second nationally in total three-pointers made (46). Leah Cauble was also perfect from downtown, getting both of her three-pointers to fall through the net.
The Chargers of Alabama at Huntsville struggled to defeat the full court press Union was enforcing in transition. UAH turned the ball over nine times in the first ten minutes of the game. Four different Lady Bulldogs were able to come up with steals in the first period (Courtney Zensen, Jazalyn Anousinh, Brooke Hampel, Lauren West).
The Lady Bulldog offense continued to dominate the game going into intermission, surpassing 50 points with over five minutes remaining in the first half. As a team, Union averages 11.9 three-pointers per game, that number was passed in the first half versus the Chargers. Going into the half Union’s Macey Lee led all scorers with 12 points. Lauren West and Leah Cauble tallied 11 and 10 points respectively. Going into halftime the Lady Bulldogs led by 43 points.
The second half of the game was much of the same for the Mark Campbell-led Lady Bulldogs. Union outscored UAH 46-31. Union put-rebounded the Chargers 40-30 and forced 36 total turnovers in their 15th win of the season. Union was led offensively by Macey Lee who tallied 16 points on 5-9 shooting. Lauren West scored 14 points in a strong performance in which she connected four times from deep. Shanique Lucas led the Lady Bulldogs in rebounds with seven for the game. Jazalyn Anousinh had a team-best four assists and four steals.
The Lady Bulldogs will begin a two-game road trip on January 11th in Rome, Georgia. That game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. tip-off.
