SELMER, Tenn. — The McNairy Central Bobcats are now in search of a head football coach. After three seasons with the program, Wes Johnson has announced his resignation effective immediately.

Johnson spent time at Dresden before taking the job in Selmer ahead of the 2021 season, giving him the unique opportunity to coach at his alma mater.

“This has been an incredibly hard decision but ultimately, I needed to put the team first,” said Johnson. “I hope that allowing new leadership to come in will create the positive narrative that this team needs for the upcoming season.”

Johnson’s team this past fall struggled to find consistency on the field, winning just 2 games in 2023. After he informed the team of his decision to step down, Johnson also delivered a heart-felt message to the local community regarding the future of the McNairy football program.

“Change desperately needs to happen. Until goals are aligned and support becomes apparent, our athletes and coaches who are in this arena of competition will continue to suffer,” said Johnson. “No one wants to see the Bobcats succeed more than me and my hope is that the next coach will be a visionary leader who can initiate and inspire commitment that can match expectations.”
