Union Women’s Basketball Cruises To Dominant Win Over Mississippi College

JACKSON, Tenn. – The No. 4/5 Lady Bulldogs defeated Mississippi College by a score of 87-41. Union is now 18-1 overall (12-1 GSC) while Mississippi College falls to 6-9 overall (5-7 GSC). Nearly 400 Union Athletics faithful came out to Fred DeLay Gymnasium Saturday afternoon, the highest-attended women’s basketball game of the season.

Before tonight’s game, Union sat in second in the GSC standings with a 12-1 conference record. The Choctaws of Mississippi College came into the game tied for eighth place with a 5-6 conference record. The No. 4/5 Lady Bulldogs are now winners of four straight.

Union began the game on a 10-2 run over the Choctaws. The Lady Bulldogs lead the nation in three-pointers made per game and connected on three more in the first period. Jazalyn AnousinhShylee Morrison, and Brooke Hampel all hit from beyond the arc to help Union to a ten-point lead to end the first period. Emma Kallas found continued success in the post, scoring twice for a total of four points.

Fifth-year Lady Bulldog Shanique Lucas kept the hot shooting going from deep with a three-pointer in the right corner for her first three points of the game. Union went on a 23-0 run, extending the Bulldog lead to 38 points. Union ended the half leading 52-14. Brooke Hampel led all players in scoring with 11 points at the break. The Lady Bulldogs shot 54.8% from the floor in the first half. Union also shot 50% from three-point range. Five different Lady Bulldog shooters scored from beyond the arc.

Union dominated the entirety of the second half of action. Union shot 45.3% from the floor including 41.9% from three-point range. Union’s largest lead of the evening stretched to 53 points. The Lady Bulldogs forced 35 turnovers which led to 44 points off turnovers.

Union was paced offensively by Brooke Hampel and Jazalyn Anousinh who each had 11 points in the victory over the Choctaws. Shanique Lucas and Emma Kallas led Union in rebounds with five and steals with three. Anousinh and Kallas led the Lady Bulldogs in assists with four each.
