Union Women’s Basketball Smashes Delta State

JACKSON, Tenn. – The No. 4/5 Lady Bulldogs to Delta State University by a score of 91-51. Union’s record improves to 19-1 overall (13-1 GSC) while Delta State’s record falls to 8-9 overall (6-7 GSC).

Before tonight’s game, Union sat in second in the GSC standings with a 12-1 conference record. The Lady Statesmen of Delta State entered the evening in seventh place with a 6-6 conference record.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early 19-point first period lead after forcing the Lady Statesmen to turn the ball over nine times in the first 10 minutes of action. Eight different Lady Bulldogs scored in the period including Emma Kallas who led the team with eight points. Union shot 68.8% from the floor in the period and 50% from three-point range.

To start the second period Macey Lee collected a steal and found her sister Olivia Lee on the fast break for the score, pushing the Union lead to 25 points with eight minutes remaining in the half. With six minutes remaining in the half Delta State answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Chelsea Hamilton and Madi Kate Vuncannon. Brooke Hampel quickly answered back with a three-pointer in transition for the Lady Bulldogs.

At the half, Union climbed to a 32-point lead off of 60.5% shooting (41.2% 3PT). Brooke Hampel and Emma Kallas both scored 12 points in the first half of action. Brooke Hampel finished the first half 5-5 from the floor and 2-2 from three-point range. Hampel also collected two rebounds and two steals in the half. Shanique Lucas ended the half with eight points (2-2 3PT).

Courtney Zensen got the scoring going for the Lady Bulldogs with a layup in the second half, thanks to a slick dish into the lane from Jazalyn AnousinhLauren West connected with her second three-pointer of the evening with six minutes remaining in the third quarter to give the Lady Bulldogs a 35-point lead.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the third period up 72-35. Five Lady Bulldogs reached double-digit scoring going into the final period. Lauren West led all shooters with 13 points off 3-6 three-point shooting going into the final period. Shanique LucasBrooke HampelEmma KallasLauren West, and Olivia Lee all tallied double-digit points before the fourth period started.

Macie Lee joined the double-digit scoring group mid-way through the final period after scoring on the baseline (assisted by Anna McCredy). Union led Delta State in shooting percentage (46.8%), three-point percentage (29%), rebounds (37-35), assists (28-12), and steals (20-7). For the second consecutive game, Brooke Hampel led Union in scoring with 14 points. Shylee Morrison led the team in rebounds with five. Jazalyn Anousinh led all players in assists with seven in the victory of the Lady Statesmen.

Union’s next game will take place on January 27 at home. The Lady Bulldogs will welcome the University of West Georgia into the Fred DeLay Gymnasium for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
