
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women’s golf team finished the first tournament of its spring season on Tuesday in seventh place at the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate, hosted by Lincoln Memorial University in St. Augustine, Fla.
Union finished with a score of +72 in the three-round, 17-team event.
Brooklyn Verdugo led Interim Head Coach Andy Rushing‘s squad at T-4 with a score of 222 (78-72-72). After a disastrous first five holes left her +6, Verdugo played the final 31 of the event to par. Her mark of 10 total birdies was only bested by two golfers in the field.
Verdugo beat all competition in Par 5 play with an average score of 4.42, carding a four on seven of her 12 Par 5s. She made birdies on all such holes in round two.
This finish is the sixth top-ten of the sophomore’s collegiate career and fourth in the top five. Verdugo recently took home silver at Trevecca’s Music City Invitational with a score of +5.
Two more Union golfers, Camille Burnette (+18) and Aubrie Cagle (+22), scored in the top half of the 87-player field.
Freshman Olivia Carroll, participating in her third collegiate tournament, shot +29. Karlie Alexander was +40.
Lander won the event with a total of 892. Hailey McLaughlin of Wingate (-1, 215) topped the individual leaderboard.
Shorter (ninth) and Christian Brothers (11th) represented the GSC alongside Union.
Next up Union will host the Natural State Golf Classic at the Cypress Creek Golf Club in Cabot, Ark., on Feb. 26-27.
