
JACKSON, Tenn. – On Feb. 23, the Union University baseball team lost to Delta State University 11-7 in game one of a three game series. The Bulldogs are now 7-6 overall (2-2 GSC), and the Statesmen are 7-5 overall (1-0 GSC).
Union struck first, scoring one run in the fourth, before Delta State tied it in the top of the fifth. The Bulldogs plated two more in the bottom half of the fifth but were unable to hold the Statesmen as they scored six runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to make it 11-3. Union got four runs in the ninth, two of which came courtesy of a Mitch Sisk homerun. However, it was not enough to beat Delta State.
Carson Chavies led Union, going 2-4 on the night and scoring two runs. Will Allen Smith, Alec Hardy, Grant Ross, Dylon Barrett, Elijah Ramsey, and Sisk all had one hit a piece.
Sam Poindexter got the start for the Bulldogs, going six innings and allowing only one run while striking out six. Lane Evans threw the seventh inning and got the loss after giving up seven runs. Ethan Orwig followed Evans and did not record an out as he surrendered three runs. Cole Smith was the fourth and final pitcher for Union, getting through the eighth and ninth innings giving up no runs and one hit.
Up next, the Bulldogs face Delta State on Feb. 24 for games two and three of the series. First pitch of the day is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
