Union Men’s Basketball’s Ahmad Johnson Named GSC Player of the Week

JACKSON, Tenn. – Union University’s Ahmad Johnson has been named the Gulf South Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Mar. 3. This is Johnson’s first player of the week honor this year and first for the team as well. Union has gotten nine freshman of the week awards this season with Jordan Pyke collecting six, Devaki Garr receiving two, and Parker Applegate earning one.

Johnson, a 6-foot-4 guard from Punta Gorda, Fla., saw significant minutes in both must-win games that Union played this week. In the Bulldogs’ upset of Lee on Feb. 29, Johnson had 26 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. He also shot 58.3 percent from the field, 80 percent from three-point range, and 88.9 percent from the free throw line. In Union’s win against Shorter on Mar. 2, Johnson scored 14 points and had three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. He shot 33.3 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the free throw line.

Up next, Johnson and the Bulldogs travel to Carrollton, Ga., for the GSC Quarterfinals against No. 13 University of West Georgia. Tipoff is scheduled for Mar. 5 at 6:30 p.m. central standard time.
