Union Softball Swept On The Road By West Florida

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team got swept by the University of West Florida in their first three-game GSC series following their bye weekend. The scores were 8-5, 16-0 in five innings, and 2-1 in nine innings, respectively. With the losses, Union falls to 22-17 overall (11-10 GSC), and West Florida improves to 26-12 overall (15-6 GSC).

The Lady Bulldogs led in game three on Saturday after Zoey Neal reached on an error in the third inning, allowing Morgan Jennings to score. West Florida responded in the fifth with a solo homerun by Jessica Ford. Union starter Lainey Baker was dealing as she struck out 14 batters and walked only one. However, she gave up a walk-off homerun to West Florida’s Jessie Baughan, bringing her overall record to 8-7 on the season.

Union had three hits in the game with one apiece coming from Macey NealZoey Neal, and Camryn Langley.

In game one on Friday, Zoey Neal and Mackenzi David each went 2-4 with a solo homerun. Sarah Kate Thompson led the offense with a perfect 3-3 game, driving in one run and scoring one run. Jennings had the most RBIs with two.

Lainey Baker threw three innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and striking out five. Emily Claire Felder pitched the last three innings in relief, allowing two runs, two hits, and one walk, and striking out one. Baker took the loss.

Game two was all Argos with the Lady Bulldogs only able to get one hit, a single through the right side by Macey Neal in the top of the fourth. Starter Riley Vaughn only recorded one out as she surrendered six runs on two hits and walked three. Addison Abell threw 1.2 innings in relief, giving up five runs (four earned) and six hits. Kira Finkley got her first appearance in the circle, pitching the final two innings and allowing five runs (four earned) and three hits while walking two.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs return home and will look to bounce back against Ouachita Baptist University in a midweek doubleheader on Apr. 10. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
