
JACKSON, Tenn. – Fesmire Field hosted over 30 Union University baseball alumni on the way to splitting their Saturday doubleheader with No. 14 Lee University. Union is now 15-23 overall (9-15 GSC)
Union lost the first game of the afternoon 7-6, battling back and forth with the Mark Brew-led Flames. Eli Snelson grinded out six innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three. Lane Evans and Ethan Orwig combined to throw three innings of one-run ball in relief behind Snelson. Union’s offense tallied nine hits, four of which were extra-bases. Blake Barrett, Caden Cuttrel, Mitch Sisk, and Carson Chavies all recorded an extra-base hit versus the Lee pitching staff. Grant Ross, Colby Davis, Sisk, and Barrett all recorded a run batted in. Freshman outfielder Elijah Ramsey shined defensively, recording three outfield assists. Ramsey’s strong arm gunned out one Flame at first and two at the plate.
Before the second game of the twin bill, Alumni from past years were celebrated for their contributions to the Union University baseball program. Union baseball icons like Andy Rushing, Ronnie Giddens, and Tommy Sadler were just a few alum in attendance to watch the Bulldogs take on the number 14 team in the country.
Senior left-handed pitcher Sam Poindexter took the rock the final game of the three-game series. Poindexter twirled 4.1 innings of six-run baseball on the way to helping Union to a 7-6 win. Ryan Evans (3-2) recorded the win for Union, throwing a perfect inning of relief before handing the ball off to Jamal Allen (4) for the save in the seventh. Union recorded eight hits in the victory and was led offensively by Ross. Ross homered for ninth long ball of his 2024 season, then followed it up lining a ball into right field to score the winning run in the sixth inning. Dyllon Barrett and Carson Chavies both recorded an extra-base hit in the win.
Union will travel to Searcy, Ark. for a midweek contest with Harding University. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
