Union Softball Clinches GSC Tournament Spot With Win Over Alabama Huntsville

JACKSON, Tenn. – In the final weekend of GSC regular season play, the Union University softball team went 1-2 against the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The Lady Bulldogs lost game one in five innings 8-0, won game two in five innings 14-0, and lost game three 6-2. By winning game two, they clinched a spot in the GSC Championships next week. Union finished the regular season 28-21 overall (16-14 GSC), while UAH finished 37-14 overall (22-8 GSC).

Game two was all Union as the offense combined for 14 runs on nine hits. In the second inning, Morgan Jennings tripled to center to drive in Bryleigh Carneal and Sarah Kate ThompsonMacey Neal followed with an RBI groundout that scored Jennings. The third inning saw a long ball each from the Neal sisters with Macey hitting a grand slam and Zoey adding a two-run bomb. In the fourth inning, Courtney Marler hit a two-RBI single and later scored on an error. Fourteen runs was enough to solidify the run-rule in five innings.

Emily Claire Felder pitched a complete game for Union allowing only two hits and five walks, while striking out five Chargers. With the win, her record improved to 6-6 on the season.

In game one, the Lady Bulldogs had only four hits and no runs. Riley Vaughn started the game and went 3.1 innings, giving up five runs on four hits and four walks. Addison Abell pitched one inning in relief and surrendered three runs and four hits while striking out one. Vaughn took the loss, bringing her record to 9-5.

In game three, Zoey Neal hit an RBI double, and Brooke Puckett added an RBI single for Union’s only two runs in the game. Kira Finkley made her first start of the season, pitching all six innings and striking out one, while giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks. Her record is now 1-1.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Oxford, Ala. for the GSC Championships, beginning May 1 at Choccolocco Park.
