BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Union men’s soccer senior Jamie Chamberlain has been named the Defensive Player of the Week by the Gulf South Conference.
Chamberlain spent 170 minutes on the Bulldog back line between Union’s wins at Harding (9/5) and Ouachita Baptist (9/7), helping the team restrict its weekend competition to a single goal.
“Jamie has started the season very well,” said head coach Steven Cox. “He has played a pivotal role in our team defending so well. We have only conceded one goal in our first five games, including preseason. He has been a great leader and teammate.”
The 6-3, 185-pound man was a presence, too, on the attacking end against Ouachita. Chamberlain headed home his first Union goal directly off a Noel Pataki corner for the final blow of Saturday’s 3-0 win.
While he hadn’t scored in a year, this was no foreign incident to Chamberlain: the defender cashed four goals in 2022 at Southwest Mississippi Community College and two the season prior at Pearl River Community College.
Last season, Chamberlain’s first in Jackson, the Herne Bay, England, product played 1123 minutes over 14 games, only once entering as a substitute.
Chamberlain and his associates will look to remain miserly tonight against Missouri-St. Louis at 5:00 p.m. Admission to Smith Memorial Soccer Complex is complimentary as a courtesy of FirstBank.
