
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Union University women’s golf team finished in first place at the King University Invitational played September 23-24. The two-round event was played at the Country Club of Bristol featuring nine teams with 47 golfers. Over the two rounds, the teams had to work around several weather delays to complete the event.
Union was in first place after the first round, shooting an even 300 (+16), five shots ahead of second place. Union, as did most teams on the second day, shot a higher score, posting a 317. Union won the event by two shots over Converse, which fired a first round 305 and a second round of 314. Union held on for the 2-shot victory.
Union’s Brooklyn Verdugo and Abigail Fernandez both shot first round scores of 72 for 1-over, good enough to lead the event after one round. The pair then both shot 7-over (78) in the second round to finish tied for fifth place.
All five of Union’s golfers finished in the top 23 (top half) of the event. Camille Burnette finished 19th (159), Cecily Berry finished 21st (161), and Olivia Carroll finished 23rd (162).
Union’s first place finish was ahead of Converse in second, Emory & Henry in third, Barton in fourth, Belmont Abbey in fifth, Tusculum in sixth, King in seventh, Young Harris in eighth, and Virginia-Wise in ninth.
Up next for Union will be the St. Simons Intercollegiate, October 14-15 in St. Simons Island, Ga. This will be the final fall event for the Lady Bulldogs.
