MARTIN, Tenn.– The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team outshot the visiting Morehead State Eagles on a hot October afternoon but fell 1-0 to the Eagles at Skyhawk Field.
The Skyhawks (2-8-3, 1-4 Ohio Valley Conference) outshot the defending OVC Tournament champions by a 22-18 margin, targeting 12 shots on goal today. Mac Titus made eight saves in a battle of two lockdown goalkeepers but Morehead State was able to make a goal in the 39th minute hold up in the end.
Peyton Cook led UT Martin with a match-high five shots and three attempts on goal. Alberte Amby (four shots, two on goal), Makayla Robinson (three shots on goal), Izzy Patterson (three shots, one shot on goal), Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles (three shots, one on goal), Unni Wolf (one shot on goal), Brooke Kala (one shot on goal), Caroline Moore (one shot) and Rachel Valenzuela (one shot) additionally put pressure on the Eagle defense.
Parker Gelinas, Shayla Addington, Kala, Patterson and Cook joined Titus as Skyhawks who played all 90 minutes this afternoon.
Three of Titus’ saves came in the opening 14 minutes, allowing the Skyhawks to fire five shots on goal during a 10-minute span in the first half. After the Eagles (6-5-3, 3-2-0 OVC) snared each attempt, Cook would have back-to-back opportunities in the 36th and 37th minutes but quality goalkeeping from Morehead State’s Lilly Bailey kept UT Martin off the scoreboard.
Titus made her fourth save of the opening half, the Eagles scored the eventual game-winner from Kamryn Baquero with 6:26 to go before the halftime break.
Titus produced a clean sheet in the second half, earning saves in the 59th, 68th, 75th and 86th minutes to give the Skyhawks a chance.
Robinson (63rd and 76th minutes) and Kala (74th minute) each had good looks with shots on goal that were rebuffed by Bailey. UT Martin’s best scoring opportunity of the day came in the 78th minute as Patterson lofted a shot from 40 yards out that grazed the top right of the crossbar for an unfriendly bounce. Amby followed nine seconds later with the final shot on goal of the day for the Skyhawks but Morehead State came up with its 12th save of the match.
UT Martin will return to Skyhawk Field on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. when it plays host to Lindenwood on ESPN+.
