MARTIN, Tenn.– The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team got in an early hole against Southeast Missouri and couldn’t complete the Senior Day comeback as the Redhawks won 2-0 at Skyhawk Field.
Izzy Patterson led UT Martin (4-10-3, 3-6-0 Ohio Valley Conference) with four shots and two shots on goal. Peyton Cook fired off three shots with one on goal while Alberte Amby (two shots), Abbie McHenry (one shot), Nyeemah Prescod-Beckles (one shot) and Brooke Kala (one shot) helped put pressure on the Southeast Missouri defense.
Goalkeeper Mac Titus would play nearly 80 minutes, making three saves while Molly Corgan made her season debut in goal with 10 shutout minutes on the pitch. Parker Gelinas, Shayla Addington, Ella Rucka, McHenry and Kala played the entire match for the Skyhawks.
The Redhawks (2-10-3, 2-4-3 OVC) used two straight corners to lead them to the opening goal from Zoe Houston in the 18th minute.
Cook looked to even the score nearly five minutes later with UT Martin’s first shot on goal of the day but the attempt was saved by Southeast Missouri goalkeeper Sophia Elfrink.
Titus stood tall with a save in the 45th minute before a Skyhawk team save off a corner kick attempt just seconds before the halftime break.
After Titus snared a save in the 57th minute, another corner kick opportunity led to an insurance goal for the Redhawks as an Elizabeth Rater header with 32:41 remaining made the score 2-0.
Patterson would rifle shots on goal in the 67th and 69th minutes but Southeast Missouri would thwart both opportunities and hold on for three points in the league standings.
Despite the result, UT Martin clinched the No. 8 seed in the OVC Soccer Championships where it will face fifth-seeded Morehead State in the tournament’s opening round on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. in Evansville, Ind.
