Union Volleyball Clinches Spot In GSC Championships With Weekend Split

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team clinched its spot in the GSC Volleyball Championships on Friday night, defeating the University of West Alabama 3-1 (25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18). The Lady Bulldogs also faced Mississippi College on Saturday and lost in four sets 3-1 (28-26, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19). Union’s overall record now sits at 10-19 (8-12 GSC).

Union outhit the Tigers 26 percent to 16.2 percent, while the Tigers had more kills with 46, assists with 44, and digs with 40. However, the Lady Bulldogs came out on top to seal their place in the GSC Championships as the seven-seed.

Jordan Moore had a big game with 11 of Union’s kills, followed by Reese Owens with eight and Marie Torosian with seven. Owens added to her night by putting up two blocks and collecting the most digs for Union with nine. Vanja Stefanovic and Ashley Pruitt each served three aces to lead the team, while Pruitt also topped the assists category with 31.

Against Mississippi College, Union put up a fight but was unable to prevail. The Choctaws outhit the Lady Bulldogs 24.3 percent to 20.8 percent and led in kills, assists, and digs.

Moore finished the weekend strong as she put up four blocks and hammered 10 kills. Stefanovic also had 10 kills, and Hope Harrington tied Moore in blocks with four. Pruitt once again led the team in both aces and assists with three and 22, respectively. Owens had the most digs with 12.

Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Nashville, Tenn., on Nov. 19, to face six-seed Trevecca Nazarene University in the first round of the GSC Championships. This is the first time that Union has been to the tournament since 2022.
