JACKSON, Tenn. – On Wednesday night, the No. 16 Union University women’s basketball team won 114-66 against Kentucky State University. The team made 24 three-pointers in the game to tie for second most in school history with the record being 26 makes. Union’s overall record is now 7-2, while Kentucky State’s overall record drops to 4-6.
The first quarter was tight, featuring seven lead changes and nine turnovers. However, Union took a five-point advantage into the second period and used six threes, two from Bethany Dillard and one each from Courtney Zensen, Alexis Callins, Shylee Morrison, and Olivia Lee, to finish the half ahead 56-32. Twelve of Union’s 14 makes in the third were from behind the arc, giving the team a season high 40-point quarter. The Lady Bulldogs added 18 points in the final period to win by 48.
Six Union players put up double-digits in the contest, led by Bethany Dillard with 26, the second-most of her career. Three other Lady Bulldogs set career or season highs. Macey Lee grabbed a season high five rebounds. Jeremia Montgomery handed out a career high six assists, and Courtney Zensen scored a season high 12 points and recorded a season high three steals, while collecting a career high three assists.
Union’s 50 three-point attempts in the game was the second most in program history. The team shot 51.3 percent (41-80) from the field, 48 percent (24-50) from behind the arc, and 57.1 percent (8-14) from the free throw line.
Khalia Bryany led Kentucky State, scoring 20 points and shooting 9-10 from the field. As a team, Kentucky State shot 51.9 percent (27-52) from the field, 25 percent (2-8) from three-point range, and 62.5 percent (10-16) from the free throw line.
Up next, the Lady Bulldogs travel to Memphis, Tenn., to face Christian Brothers University on Dec. 13 at 5:00 p.m. Union’s next home game will come on Jan. 2, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. against the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
